Poliquin Probiotics

Probiotics are living organisms that are good for our health and are often found in the digestive system. They are referred to as “good” bacteria when they are given in proper amounts and provide positive health benefits to the host. Probiotics are part of Poliquin’s foundational five supplement stack because many individuals have gut bacterial imbalances caused by environmental toxins found in the air, certain medications, alcohol and illnesses. Some claims have been made within the food and nutrition industry stating that most fermented foods and drinks contain probiotics while they actually contain live cultures. For example, yogurt contains lactobacillus bulgaricus which is one of the live organisms that converts milk to yogurt during fermentation. However, this is not a true probiotic because it is not given in a specific amount and it is not intended to provide a benefit to the human gut.

When searching for quality probiotics, check to make sure these things are listed on the product:
– Name
– Type of species
– Strain
– Amount of organisms
– Date of manufacturing
– Expiration date

For example, the Poliquin Pro Flora contains 15 billion (amount) living organisms of Lactobacillus acidophilus (species), NCFM® (strain). As well, the Pro Flora has the date of manufacturing and expiration clearly printed on each bottle (Poliquin Group, personal communication, June 7, 2015).

Issues Related to Insufficient Probiotics
– Fatigue
– Depression
– Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
– Headache
– Poor Immune Function
– Joint Pain
– Inflammation
– Food Allergies (Poliquin Group, personal communication, June 7, 2015)

Benefits of Probiotics
– Produces lactase for improved lactose digestion
– Helps to protect against infection
– Reduces bloating and detoxifies the bowel
– Helps to limit antibiotic related diarrhea (Probiotics, 2015)
– Inhibits certain enzymes that create excess estrogen production (Jockers, 2013)
