Through our therapist’s experiences with assisting to teach ACL courses to physiotherapists and athletic therapists, to presenting at various conferences and extra-curricular courses, we understand the most effective and efficient way to get you back to sport.

Each rehabilitation program will follow activity progressions including knee mobility, gait re-education, hip and knee stability exercises with progression to plyometrics and sport specific movement patterns when appropriate. Our therapists understand that incorporating sport specific exercise into the rehabilitation process is critical to improve athlete confidence. Regardless of the competitive level or type of sport or activity, at Pure we will tailor your rehabilitation program to optimize your athletic performance.

Foot and Ankle Injuries icon
Foot and Ankle Injuries

Thanks to an important combination of staying on top of the most current research as well as having a great deal of Pure is fortunate to have leading experts in the field of injuries arising from the foot and ankle.  We will work hard towards helping you with your pain and get you back to the activities you enjoy.

Some common foot and ankle problems that patients present with are plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinitis, shin splints, ankle sprains and big toe pain. Rehabilitation of the foot and ankle is based on a thorough biomechanical assessment of how your whole body works. With this assessment, specific problems of how your body works are identified. A thorough rehabilitation program follows to help diminish pain, stretch out tight structures, strengthen weak structures, get parts moving in a more efficient way, and assist the retraining of specific movement patterns.

A complete treatment program for your foot and ankle problem may include, but may not be limited to: therapeutic modalities, manual therapy, stretching/strengthening, biomechanical re-education exercises, instruction on proper footwear, and the use of orthotics or braces.

As an important part of the treatment, we’ll attempt to educate you on what your problem is, why it’s happening and what we can do to improve the situation together. Treatment intervention will be initiated within the clinic but more importantly is the inclusion of a home exercise and care regime. We’ll direct you on what you need to do, and what not to do (at home, at work, with daily activities and with your fitness regime) to improve you symptoms and function. We at Pure, can apply therapeutic techniques try to help you get better but more importantly our philosophy is that we’ll point you in the right direction to “make yourself better”.

Chronic low back pain icon
Chronic Low Back Pain

Our physiotherapists and kinesiologists are trusted by Winnipeg’s top orthopaedic spinal surgeons to deliver spinal rehabilitation programming.

Our consistent communication with the orthopaedic surgeon allows us to understand the entire picture and treat your back to the fullest extent.

A high percentage of patients that eventually get a consultation with a spinal surgeon will learn that they are not considered a candidate for surgery. This is a long wait to learn that therapeutic exercise and lifestyle counselling will aid in their recovery. Whether you need surgery, or are suffering from a long-standing back injury that does not require surgical intervention, we can help. What sets us apart is the role we play in our clients’ ability to achieve long lasting success when it comes to back pain management, even as they wait for a consultation.

We strive to exceed expectations when it comes to functional restoration of the patient.

We know manual therapy and how it needs to be applied to help you regain your range of motion and your function. Your goals are at the forefront and we love helping you get back your activities of daily living, get back on the golf course, and get back to playing with your children or grand-children. We apply exercise physiology and therapeutic exercise principles to encourage positive lifestyle changes in order to get the best treatment with the fastest results.

Manual Therapy icon
Manual Therapy

Manual physiotherapy is a hands-on approach done to mobilize or manipulate joints where we combine this with advanced post-degree knowledge of clinical reasoning. With the right application and the right clinical reasoning, manual therapy can change a movement pattern from painful to pain free, all thanks to better joint mobility!

To ensure you maintain the range of motion gains achieved at each appointment, your therapist will provide you with exercises to further increase your range of motion. Our goal is to teach you how to optimize your range of motion so that you can go back to your day with better function!

Keeping in mind that this is one piece of the treatment puzzle, it is a powerful tool and we make sure it’s done at its best by having the highest quality education in post-graduate physiotherapy. When you come to Pure Physiotherapy, you know that it is nothing short of high quality.

Acupuncture icon
Acupuncture

One tool that Pure physiotherapists use to speed up your recovery is acupuncture. Acupuncture is the insertion of extremely fine needles through the skin at specific points on the body to stimulate specific structures and promote healing. We use acupuncture to effectively control pain, reduce inflammation, provide regeneration, restore physical functions, and normalize nervous system activities. Acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins, which results in pain relief, relaxation, and balance of the body’s energy, thus promoting general health and well-being.

We believe that acupuncture is especially beneficial when combined with other aspects of your physiotherapy program, such as manual and exercise therapy. We commonly use it to treat both acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions such as joint sprains, muscle strains, tendonitis, disc injuries, osteoarthritis, headaches, and many more. In addition, we make sure you have an appropriate exercise program to maintain all benefits gained!

We don’t charge any additional fees for acupuncture. If we feel you would benefit from it, we will discuss it with you and potentially include it as part of your treatment. If you have any questions or are wondering whether acupuncture would be an appropriate treatment option for you, feel free to ask us!

Neurological Rehabilitation icon

Sport Physiotherapy icon
Sport Physiotherapy

Confidence is a critical component to any athlete’s success. However, a crucial component to maintaining confidence is knowing that your body is prepared to take on anything your sport may throw your way. Sport rehabilitation involves rebuilding that confidence just as much as it involves rebuilding any damaged or weakened tissues.

When we say Sport Physiotherapy, we mean just that – from assessing risk factors related to potential injuries, to working with an integrated team of sports medicine physicians, kinesiologists, and massage therapists, our physiotherapy department has all the tools needed to get you back to sport.

As part of your assessment and treatment program, we will evaluate your unique biomechanics and offer insight into how to improve your movement patterns in order to prevent re-injury and optimize performance. We can also use video analysis to show you potential inefficiencies that may be holding you back on game or race day. We also offer sport taping and bracing solutions where necessary.

Vestibular Rehabilitation icon
Vestibular Rehabilitation

Dizziness and balance problems are some of the most commonly reported symptoms and can be caused by a variety of different conditions.  It’s important to have a thorough assessment to determine the underlying cause.

One area that could be involved is the vestibular system.  The vestibular system (sometimes known as the “inner ear”) is a complex apparatus that is highly involved with perception of head movement and position. Signs and symptoms of vestibular dysfunction include nystagmus, vertigo, imbalance or compromised gaze stability.

One common vestibular condition is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). There are small “crystals” in the vestibular system that perceive position and movement.  It’s possible for these crystals to get dislodged and settle in the wrong canal. This can cause vertigo that often occurs during position changes. The treatment for BPPV can be done in clinic by our therapists who will perform repositioning techniques for the crystals.

Other vestibular conditions include:

  • Vestibular neuritis/labyrinthitis
  • Migraine associated vertigo
  • Meniere’s disease
  • Perilymphatic Fistula
  • Acoustic neuroma

Physical activity has consistently been shown to be associated with improved physical health, life satisfaction, cognitive functioning, and psychological well-being. Studies have shown that as an adjunctive treatment, exercise can be effective and cost-efficient alternative or adjunct treatment for a variety of depression and anxiety related disorders.

Our physiotherapists and certified exercise physiologist work directly with insurance companies to help employees who are dealing with mental health struggles optimize function, mood and independence, with the goal or helping them re-enter the workplace.

Pelvic Floor Therapy

Pelvic floor therapy is available for both men and women experiencing various forms of pelvic floor dysfunction. Some forms of pelvic floor dysfunction include bowel and bladder dysfunction, sexual dysfunction, pelvic girdle pain, pelvic organ prolapse, and pelvic floor muscle dysfunction.

Pelvic floor therapists are specially trained to assess the external and internal structures of the pelvic region to properly diagnose and treat pelvic floor dysfunctions. A pelvic floor therapist can also assist in your prenatal and postnatal journey to help prepare for labour and delivery along with assisting you back to physical activity and preventing future dysfunction.

Consider seeing a pelvic floor therapist if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • pelvic girdle, hip, groin, or low back pain that has plateaued with regular physiotherapy treatment
  • pain with intercourse or other sexual dysfunctions
  • bowel or bladder incontinence, urgency, frequency, or incomplete emptying
  • pelvic organ prolapse
  • pre and post surgery including: prostate surgery, hysterectomy, or any abdominal surgery including c-section recovery
  • pre and postnatal care and prevention

Dry Needling

Dry needling is an intramuscular technique performed with fine acupuncture needles. Rather than leaving the needles in for a period of time, as is done with acupuncture, the needles are used to elicit a twitch response in the muscle or help alleviate painful trigger points. This is done with a transverse needling technique (across the muscle) to keep the treatment safe and effective. It can be particularly helpful in treating sports injuries and chronic pain, as well as many other conditions.

Dry needling can cause some discomfort when the muscle grasps the needle, but this muscle release stimulates the body’s natural healing response, decreases pain, relaxes the muscle, and causes a beneficial neurophysiological response. It is common to have some local aching following the treatment, however improvements to pain and mobility can be noted immediately.

If you have any questions or are wondering if dry needling would be a beneficial treatment for you, please ask us!

Jean-François Bérard

Vice President & Chief Allied Health Officer, Physiotherapist

Before graduating as a practicing therapist, JF knew that he had to make a difference in his future profession. With a strong passion for his career choice, as well as a true belief in what physiotherapy can bring to those in need, he has proudly integrated his philosophy into Pure Lifestyle. JF practices an ‘off-the-grid’ type of therapy that only uses heat, ice and acupuncture as modalities when deemed necessary. All the methods of intervention revolve around educating clients, hands-on skills, and tailored therapeutic exercise applications. Years later, Pure is now proudly continuing this style of therapy with the help of an amazing team that believes in its effectiveness.

“I love what I do and I am always extremely excited to share that knowledge with someone who cares about helping themselves. It is a privilege and one that I do not take lightly. I also make sure to practice what I preach, and lead by example for my clients.”

Jean-François’ clients will appreciate his incredible attention to detail, starting with a comprehensive assessment, which he believes is the basis of any effective treatment plan. He takes time to educate clients about their injury and treatment plan in order to help them move towards pain free function. Teamwork between the client and therapist throughout the entire process is key and allows for proper progression and recovery.

Matthew Short

Physiotherapist

Matthew graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Kinesiology degree in 2017, then went on to complete his Master’s of Physical Therapy Degree in 2019 also at the U of M.

Growing up, Matt competed in various sports including volleyball, basketball, golf, baseball, badminton, and soccer, but it was the sport of ice hockey that he excelled at. He competed at the provincial level in Manitoba and has also worked as a goaltending coach for various organizations throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan. It was through hockey that he was first exposed to physiotherapy, as he sought physio services for many years due to a congenital hip condition.

Matt also brings several years of experience working as a strength and conditioning coach in multiple gyms throughout Winnipeg, including the University of Manitoba Bison’s weight room. It was in these positions that he developed knowledge and proficiency related to exercise prescription for various populations. This background experience has fostered Matt’s preference for an active-based rehabilitation approach to help clients return to, or surpass their previous level of functioning, and it aligns perfectly with Pure Lifestyle’s approach to care.

Matt believes strongly in the importance of continuing education and being a lifelong learner. He loves to regularly listen to podcasts and audiobooks relating to physiotherapy, exercise, nutrition and social psychology. He also plans to pursue further education and certifications relating to manual therapy, advanced exercise prescription, pain science and acupuncture. Along with some of the other Pure Lifestyle staff, Matt is an active member of the Sports Physiotherapy Manitoba executive committee and is excited to participate in its duties for the years to come.

Matt’s philosophy for care is straightforward: provide clients with the tools and education that will help them take control of their health, manage their injuries and gain confidence in moving.

Diane graduated from the University of Manitoba in 2007 with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy. She spent the first 14 years of her career in acute care at the Health Sciences Centre specifically in neurosurgery, trauma and surgical/medical intensive care. Her experience in acute care has allowed her to build strong clinical reasoning and the ability to effectively collaborate with all health care practitioners. In 2021 she completed the competency-based vestibular training to focus her practice on vestibular rehabilitation. Her acute care background allows for a very thorough assessment and understanding of each patient. Timely and thorough vestibular care is very difficult to find in Winnipeg and Diane is excited to provide this service to patients as she believes they should not have to suffer from vertigo and dizziness alone. As a former gymnast, Diane’s passion for physical activity and health is still a huge part of her life. Most weekends are spent at the lake, biking, swimming and hiking with her husband Blake and 2 children: Danica and Nolin.

Karen Reimer

Physiotherapist

Karen graduated with BMR P.T. from University of Manitoba in 1995. The following year she obtained competency in vestibular rehabilitation from Dr. S. Herdman at the University of Miami. Vestibular rehab/physiotherapy is a passion for Karen and she has pursued extensive training over the past 27 years from world renowned educators and researchers in this field. In 2013, Karen obtained a research MSc in Rehabilitation as she presented a novel treatment for peripheral vestibular hypofunction. Karen’s passion for vestibular rehab led her to develop and teach competency based vestibular physiotherapy training for practicing physiotherapists in Canada. Karen “semi-retired” in 2020 which allowed time for her to begin the process of re-imagining how to present her Fundamentals of Vestibular Rehabilitation: A Competency Based Course. This has led to the very popular “hybrid” version of the course consisting of on-line presentations followed by in-person learning of critical skills and techniques. Karen has presented this version of the course numerous times and in multiple locations since 2021. Her next goal is to develop the advanced skills course (Beyond the Fundamentals) into a “hybrid” version as well. Additionally, Karen mentors physiotherapists who have completed her competency training course and is a sessional lecturer in the University of Manitoba, MPT program.

Karen deeply loves her chosen area of vestibular rehabilitation and is excited to return to part-time patient care while still offering continuing education in vestibular rehab to physiotherapy colleagues and mentoring a number of physiotherapists who have taken her course, including Diane.

Work - life balance is important to Karen so she loves to be outside in her garden, going for long walks with her husband, pilates, and baking up a storm in her kitchen! She is also a voice actor, lending her voice to a character in a children’s audio program.  Always willing to learn new things, Karen obtained her Professional Chocolatier certificate in 2022.

Kevin completed his Master of Physical Therapy at the University of Manitoba. Prior to entering physiotherapy, Kevin worked as a professional counsellor, obtaining his Master of Counselling Degree in 2013. As a counsellor, Kevin learned many important skills that are just as important in Physiotherapy. One crucial skill was how to make his clients feel heard.

As a young teenager, Kevin took up skateboarding and spent nearly 20 years pursuing that passion. Skateboarding provided the opportunity to travel throughout Canada, California, and Costa Rica on numerous skate trips. As an adult, Kevin became interested in endurance sports, particularly Triathlon (swim, bike, run). From both his experience as a skater and an endurance athlete, Kevin understands the challenges that come with training for a sport you love. He also understands how frustrating and disruptive unexpected injuries can be. It was through his own experiences of injury that Kevin came to appreciate the role that physiotherapy and exercise-based rehab can play in the rehab process.

Kevin's goal as a physio is to be a lifelong learner. He is committed to putting his best into the work he does and constantly improving as a physiotherapist. Kevin also believes that learning from patients and tailoring treatment to their specific needs is essential for success. It is with this approach that Kevin can help patients develop the tools they need to gain confidence and be in control of their own health and wellness.

He regards exercise as one of the most powerful ways in which he can influence his patient’s health and, with a primarily active approach, works hard to help others achieve their goals, promote independence, and foster resilience.

Curtis’ love for education extends well beyond his direct clinical involvement. From 2015-2020 he served as a board member of the MB- Section of Sport Physiotherapy Canada where his primary role as the education chair was to bring in high quality continuing education courses and speakers to therapists in the community. He has also served as a clinical supervisor and mentor for several physiotherapy students and physiotherapy exam candidates.

Curtis has a wealth of clinical experience working in multidisciplinary environments and places a high value on interprofessional collaboration to ensure patients receive the highest level of care possible.
